Non Surgical Perineal Repair in London and Essex
As women age, like many other parts of the body, the vaginal labia majora (the outermost folds or lips surrounding the vagina) can become lax and loose volume. These changes can be compounded with childbirth and the menopause.
During menopause, decrease in oestrogen secretion can lead to loss of elasticity and volume of labia majora. As a result vaginal mucosa(the redder skin which is normally protected by lips surrounding vagina) becomes dry, less hydrated and thinner. The glandular cells get less nutrition and begin to function poorly.
These can be treated medically by Hormone Replacement Therapy. Other options are
- Injections of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) in the vaginal mucosa
- Injections of cross-linked, non-animal hyaluronic acid (NaHa) with mannitol (Desirial) in the vaginal mucosa
What is PRP?
PRP, stands for Platelet rich plasma and it repairs and rehydrates the tissue .
The advantages of PRP are: Quick results within a week, it is autologous blood (not synthetic) and PRP has no side affects.
The disadvantages of PRP: The procedure may not work in certain individuals, especially in women who smoke or drink excessively.
The PRP preparation has 4 times more platelets than normal blood.
Average amount of blood needed is about 10 mL of blood (1 tube)
The time depends on the time that the cells regenerate. It is 4-6 weeks.
Success rate of PRP in treating atrophic vaginitis is from 85-90% success rate.

What are Hyaluronic Injections?
Generally treatment is performed in conjunction with application of a topical local anaesthetic cream to avoid discomfort.
These treatments are available to women who prefer not to use or cannot use HRT(Hormone Replacement Treatment)
According to Laboratoires Vivacy, as many as 80% of women entering menopause are affected by vaginal dryness and about 50% of women completing menopause continue to experience vaginal dryness.
Hyaluronic acid is completely broken down within the skin over a period of months, eventually leaving no trace of the filler.
Desirial is a cross-linked hyaluronic acid dermal filler product that has been developed specifically for treating female vulvo-vaginal conditions, such as vaginal atrophy.
Desirial is used to treat trophic conditions, restoring hydration, tone, elasticity and sensitivity, while reducing mucosal dryness and strengthening the delicate muscles within the vagina, restoring suppleness. Typical conditions that can be treated using Desirial include: dyspareunia, dryness, vulvodynia, irritation, discomfort, itching and heat/pulling sensations in peri-menopausal individuals.
Suitable for peri-menopausal women or those of reproductive age who are suffering from dehydration of the vulva, with or without irritation
Desirial treatment lasts for at least 6 months and can lasts for approximately 1-2 years.
